What is a tsunami?

A tsunami is an extremely high wave from the sea that unexpectedly inundates coastal areas, usually caused by a seaquake. About 50 km off the coast of Evenia, in the ocean, lies the separation of 2 earth plates. Those earth plates came to a collision and caused a seaquake.

What happened?

After the Tsunami went ashore, all electricity went out in the affected region. For a long time, it was not possible to contact the region. Around 12pm this afternoon, the first real reports with updates trickled in from our public broadcaster. We got a preliminary figure of casualties, it was said to be 76 dead and more than 2,400 still missing. So the death toll is still likely to rise. Some 200 square kilometres of eastern Evenia have been devastated.

We have already contacted the local authorities, and they were able to tell us that the devastation is enormous. The popular seaside resort, Appletina, was particularly affected. Appletina is a beach town where more than 60,000 tourists spend their holidays every year. The 5-star luxery resort Apple Beach was also affected by the severe tsunami. The entire ground floor was destroyed and most of the rooms were also damaged. We got in touch with the manager of the hotel. According to him, there were few casualties in his hotel as they were closed for renovation works.

What now?

It will take several years before the affected part of Evenia will be restored to its current state. We therefore ask you, residents of Evenia, to help where you can. A fund has already been started #saveEastEvenia to raise money for the reconstruction. But even now, you can already do things. Help search for possible survivors or donate clothes, food, toys for all the victims.
